Design: Osvaldo Borsani Osvaldo Borsani born: 1911 Italy died: 1985 Italy Italian designers were experimenting with new philosophies and new ways of design after the war: many were designing a new kind of utopia. Extreme modernity was the motto. This approach was reinforced in the design of the Lounge chair P40 and D70 created by Osvaldo Borsani in 1954 for Tecno, the company he himself founded in 1952 with his brother Fulgenzio. The D70 was a sofa that could be transformed into a bed. Based on Borsani’s belief that design should be born of technical research, these two designs are highly innovative in the flexibility of their use. The P40 chair can be adjusted into 468 positions and even folded completely in half to save space. During Tecno’s early years, this Firm was famous for its experiments with new materials such as rubber and foam rubber. From 1952 until his death in 1985, Borsani was the main designer of this leading firm.
